“50% up-front for materials” is the most common opening move of a contractor in cashflow trouble. Check what's being asked against your state's rules before any money moves.
General guidance only, not legal advice — caps vary with contract type and change over time. Verify with your state authority before paying or withholding a deposit.
How to read your result
Over the guideline doesn't automatically mean scam — genuine off-site fabrication (kitchens, trusses, windows) can justify structured early payments. But the structure should be documented, tied to identifiable materials, and never a bare percentage into a trade's general account. If the number is over and the explanation is vague, that's your answer.
